Gaoler's Daughter Interview

How did you come up with the band name?

Alfie - She is a character from Kenneth Grahame’s novel ‘Wind in the Willows’.

What artists and genres have you taken influence or inspiration from to create your sound?

Alex – Everything! If I hear a good melody or bass line in house, drum n bass, rock, jazz etc I'll take influence from it
Alfie - Personally I tend not to take my influences from artists or genres, for example I do not to listen to mainstream radio, as I feel it would be a negative influence on me, and what I play.
Ben – Yeah, I don’t think any of us listen to mainstream radio. As far as my drumming goes, most of my drum heroes are jazz players. But I listen to all kinds of music. We all have varied tastes and love turning each other onto un-discovered artists or sounds.

What are your hopes and aspirations for the future?

Alex - To get heard! and to afford my rent.
Alfie – To play music every day.
John – Go on tour and play all the big festivals this summer.
Ben – Yep.

Any up and coming gigs and releases?

January 29th – Wheelbarrow in Camden
February 17th – THE BIG ONE! Your gig at Buffalo
Bar April 28th – Hackney Downs Studios.
Yard-life Festival.
We’ve got some more UK dates being confirmed soon to coincide with the release of our next single ‘How Do You Know?’ in early March. Then, a tour of Spain and some other European dates too hopefully.

How do you see the music being sold in the future? Where will the bands income come from?

Alfie - I hope music will be sold in a live capacity, with income coming from ticket sales and merchandise.
John – Yeah, I see more money being in live shows and touring. Also in syncing for films, tv, console games etc.
Ben – All I know is that we are all poor…

If you could go on tour and support a band right now, who would it be?

Alex – I’d love to support The Fall’. I love them and always have.
Ben – I think it would be funny to go on tour with RUSH. I imagine it would be like Spinal Tap.

If you could change one thing or do one thing better what would it be?

Alfie – Remove all advertising from mass media platforms. And limit the influence it has on society.
Alex – Save money.
Ben – Skin up while driving.
John - Go full time with the band.

Excluding this interview, what has been the best thing to happen to you since forming?

Alex - Having the best rhythm section I have ever played with.
John – All the nights out after gigs.
Ben – Loads of great things happen in this band. We did some dates with Babyshambles which was a lot of fun. We get to work with loads of very talented people who love music and rock n roll and each other!

What advice would you give new artists?

  • Are you aware of any organizations that can offer help and support? Alex – Strummerville. Ben – Yeah, definitely check them out. They do lots of great work helping emerging talent. They’ve helped us out a lot.
  • How to get gigs? Alfie – Start small and work your way up from the bottom. There are no shortcuts. Persevere and never give up. Ben – Just play. Play anywhere and everywhere with anyone. Play any genre of music in any setting.
  • Recording? John – Always demo songs really roughly as soon as you’ve written them before going into the studio. It helps develop the song.
  • Making videos? Ben – It’s hard. We have just made our first proper video for our next single. We have managed, with the help of some friends, to make it for next to nothing but I guess you have to have friends who can borrow a camera and editing equipment. Not everyone can do that. For Months now, the only videos we had on YouTube was gig footage taken from fan’s phones and mini-cameras. That’s worked well for us.

Name 3 up and coming bands that are rocking your world at the moment?

Alex – A local band to me called ‘Filthy Boy’. They are Peckham boys. They have a real good sound. Also, for a bit of high-energy, check out my mate’s band ‘SKETS’
John – They’ve pretty much already made it but I think ‘Tribes’ are good.
Alfie – ‘The History Of Apple Pie’. I love their bass player.
Ben – Dan Fatel has a new band called ‘Cut’. They’re playing with us at The Wheelbarrow on 29th January. I’m looking forward to hearing them live.

If I asked you to provide a nonsensical response to a question that I hadn't even thought of yet, what would your answer be?

John - Purple

Thanks for that and anything else you would like to share about your band?

Alex - I wouldn’t give you one.
Alfie - 'All of a sudden I noticed a distinct fingerprint on the bun, the small whorls in the middle fanning out like the ripples fish make in a pond'. Mimosa. Zhang xianliang. (1984).
Ben - Has anyone else read the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ books yet by George R R Martin? They’re really good. I just finish book 5. Hurry up write the last 2 George!
